2024 International Fire Code® (IFC®) – Soft Cover Edition

The 2024 International Fire Code (IFC) establishes regulations designed to safeguard life and property from fire and explosion hazards. It addresses critical topics such as general fire safety precautions, emergency planning and preparedness, fire department access and water supply, automatic sprinkler and fire alarm systems, special hazards, and the storage and use of hazardous materials.

Key Updates in the 2024 IFC

• Energy Storage Systems (ESS): Expanded and refined provisions now reference NFPA 855 alongside IFC Section 1207, reflecting the continued evolution of ESS technologies.

• Lithium-Ion Batteries: New requirements regulate the research, storage, and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries through enhanced building design, detection systems, and automatic sprinkler protection. A dedicated section provides tools for managing battery collection.

• Powered Micromobility Devices: Added regulations address hazards associated with charging these devices, including product listings, separation requirements, and detection systems.

• Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detection: CO alarms or detection systems are now required for all occupancy types, expanding beyond the previous focus on residential and educational facilities.

• A2L Refrigerants: The IFC and IBC now recognize the use of flammable A2L refrigerants, establishing regulated safety provisions and defining two flammable gas hazard levels in alignment with Global Harmonized System (GHS) classifications.

• Distilled Spirits and Wine Storage: Fire protection requirements have been further refined using data developed by FM Global.

• Valet Trash: Valet trash collection is permitted only when approved by the authority having jurisdiction. New Appendix O outlines requirements for adoption, with compliance required from both property owners and service providers.

• Inflatable Amusement Devices: Section 3107 has been added to establish safety requirements for these devices.

• Temporary Heating and Cooking Operations: New Chapter 41 consolidates and expands requirements related to temporary heating and cooking activities.

• Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems (ERCES): Section 510 has been updated to reflect current terminology and technology and now references NFPA 1225-2022.

Improved Format and Usability

As part of the ICC’s digital transformation strategy, the 2024 I-Codes® feature significant formatting enhancements for better usability and sustainability:

• Single-column layout with modernized fonts for improved readability

• QR codes are replacing margin indicators to identify code changes more accurately

• Shaded table headers and notes for faster reference

• Related tables and figures are placed immediately after the corresponding sections

• Ability to validate book authenticity and register with ICC to receive incentives
